Degrees Offered: Undergraduate, 2-Year, On-line Courses, Certification

Description:
The University of Wisconsin-Green Bay Adult Degree Program offers a Bachelor of Arts with a major in Interdisciplinary Studies. It is a fully accredited bachelor's degree program using distance learning methods to accommodate the needs of the returning adult student whose lifestyle or circumstance prevents attendance at traditional on-campus courses. Employment, family, or community obligations need not keep adults from completing their university degrees. Adult Degree students fulfill all academic requirements and meet the standards of educational quality characteristic of the University of Wisconsin System.

Bachelor of Arts: Interdisciplinary Studies students gain the liberal arts skills which enable them to manage people, information, and products. Students may acquire transferable skills such as information management, design and planning, research and investigation, communication, human relations and interpersonal skills, critical thinking and problem solving, management and administration. The degree also allows students to choose an area of emphasis in a discipline they wish to study in-depth.

Students attend Saturday half-day classes once per month and work independently between classes. Some classes are offered on-line, or through audio and videotape. Independent Study courses require meetings with the faculty as individual appointments for some subjects.

Because students are dispersed geographically, most interaction among students is limited to classes, e-mail, Internet and teleconferences. Students attend the program from areas all across the state of Wisconsin and some attend from bordering states.

The Adult Degree Program provides an effective balance of flexibility and structure for the adult student.

FLEXIBILITY AND STRUCTURE

Students have opportunities to bring their own interests into their program of study. The combination of elective courses, area of emphasis courses, and required courses in the Interdisciplinary Studies major adds up to a substantial concentration of knowledge, tailored to individual needs.

The Adult Degree Program staff places great importance on the individual student. Classes are small and the Saturday meetings are generally three hours long. Professors make a special effort to compensate for distance; students often receive study guides to supplement learning activities.

1. You can work full-time and participate.
2. You can live anywhere in the state and participate
3. You can register and start classes any month of the year
4. You arrange study time to fit your schedule
5. You choose Saturday classes to fit your personal schedule (more on it in Delivery Modes)
6. You design a personalized area of emphasis

HOW COURSES ARE DELIVERED

I. Saturday Courses:

Most Saturday classes have a pre-assignment that must be completed before the start of class. Most classes meet from 9:00 a.m. to Noon (AM classes) or 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. An approved proctor monitors exams outside of class. Class meet dates are about a month apart. Students work independently on many projects and take tests between class dates.

II. On-line Courses:

Internet classes are conducted entirely on the Internet. They are structured with assignments, tests and discussions often due each week over a 15-16 week period. The classes are asynchronous, so students can access the class and do work anytime of the day or night.

III. Web-Enhanced Courses:

Web-enhanced courses will have pre-determined Saturday meetings with the instructor, but parts of the course will be conducted on-line, with discussions, assignments or exams on the Internet.

IV. Audio and videotape Courses:

Courses conducted on audio/videotape are independent study courses that have the course content on audio or videotapes or both with other readings in textbooks.

V. Independent Study Courses:

Courses conducted by independent study are arranged with the Director and a faculty member who meets with the faculty member to develop the requirements for the project, grading expectations, and the timetable for completion.

STRUCTURE

1. Personalized academic advising for each student
2. Degree requirements supply a specific framework for study
3. Study is guided by support materials
4. Faculty members are available to provide assistance
5. Special library services and media materials supplement some courses
6. Meet your professors and classmates at Saturday class sessions held on the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay campus.
